Scott
As Rick Phillips reminded me the other day-John Piper is considered the de facto leader of the surging Calvinistic movement among those that CT once described as the young and restless Reformed- and Piper is a self-professed 'Charismatic Calvinist'. Is this the wave of the future or a passing fad?

Whiskeyjack: I stumbled upon your post while our new church is in the process of approving our own statement of faith. This is a very thought-provoking post, and I appreciate reading that there are still some people around who go beyond the usual "doctrine is so divisive" and "I have no creed except Jesus" comments I keep hearing.

Keep on writing - I like what you have to say -

I guess it all depends on whose version of theonomy. I would be interested in hearing your take on theonomy. And from what I remember, the thing which unites theonomy is a hermeneutic rather than conclusions. So I guess there might be many variations that seem similar but may in fact be different. As well, I will admit to not making a distinction between theocratic and theonomic constructs, and the title was a bit pejorative I admit, but sometimes I am a bit mischievous.

Whiskey,

Nicely written, but, uhhh, what does this have to do with why you're not a Theonomist? Sounds to me like what you know of Theonomy is from an incorrect 3rd party instead of the original authors.

"...we ourselves certainly think that they ought constantly to be criticized in order that it may be seen that they will stand the test."

What a great line. I think that we take our faith for granted way too much. We allow others to do the hard work for us and never bother to do any investigative work ourselves. We end up at, "I believe because that's what I was taught." But this challange that Machen talks about is exactly where we ought to be. And not just looking into the easy either, but the deep things that would shake us up. Almost like a divine doubt that forces us to wrestle with our faith and fighting to understand for ourselves. Great stuff. Kudos!
