The Stoic Pursuit of Hedonism

If the only purpose in this life is of our fabrication, lacking a preceding impulse, then we are without purpose in the world. Truly, if we exist by chance rather than intent then purpose may not be found. Our goals, our sense of purpose, these would simply be extensions of our ego, a narcissistic projection, if you will. Our existence, lacking inherent, intrinsic value would transform all perceived value into an ascription of projected desire. In other words, value would be derived according to the level of desire that we possess for a given object.

This is a noetic consequent of the fall, for man adrift of purpose looks inward and confuses desire with meaning and value. And so love becomes hatred of others and the exaltation and pursuit of internal desires over the external needs of others. It robs all virtue of goodness and supplants it with pleasure.

The inherent purpose of creation may not reside within man apart from the crucifixion of his ego. Sin robs man of his dignity and debases existence.
